Why Do We Teach Computing?
At Great Corby School and Nursery, we believe that computing enables children to Explore, Discover and Learn in an increasingly digital world. Technology is a part of everyday life and we want our children to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to use it safely, responsibly and creatively.
Our computing curriculum is designed to spark curiosity about how technology works, encourage problem-solving and develop resilience when facing new challenges. We want children to understand that technology is not just something they consume, but a powerful tool they can use to create, communicate, collaborate and innovate.
Through purposeful and engaging learning experiences, children develop the skills needed to become responsible digital citizens, preparing them for the opportunities and challenges of the modern world.

Explore
Children explore a wide range of technology, digital tools and software through hands-on experiences. They are encouraged to investigate, experiment and develop confidence when using unfamiliar technology, understanding that mistakes and problem-solving are an important part of learning.
Discover
Children discover how technology works and how it shapes the world around them. They learn how digital systems connect people, share information and solve problems, whilst developing an understanding of how to stay safe and responsible online.
Learn
Children learn the knowledge, vocabulary and technical skills needed to use technology effectively and creatively. Through computer science, information technology and digital literacy, they develop the ability to code, create, communicate, analyse and evaluate using a range of digital tools.
What Does Computing Look Like at Great Corby?
Computing is taught through a carefully sequenced curriculum which enables children to build upon prior learning and develop their knowledge and skills over time.
Children learn through five key areas:
• Computer Systems and Networks
• Programming
• Creating Media
• Data Handling
• Online Safety
Where meaningful, computing is linked to other areas of the curriculum, allowing children to apply their digital skills across a range of subjects and real-life contexts. Children use technology to research, create, communicate, present information and solve problems, helping them understand how computing can support learning beyond dedicated computing lessons.
Online safety is woven throughout the curriculum. Children are taught how to stay safe online, manage digital relationships responsibly and make informed choices when using technology both in school and beyond.
